The Perfect Place

Writer's picture: Karen Derrick-DavisKaren Derrick-Davis

I stumbled upon the perfect place for this first Adventure with Bedichek. My lodging is on a simple urban homestead with chickens, a turkey, rainwater catchment tanks and gardens. We are only 1.5 miles from the site of the Bedichek home and the University of Texas campus.

The bed is wonderfully comfortable and the bedroom has tons of windows -- which I love. Each morning brings a peaceful collection of wild bird songs -- beyond the cardinal who greeted me the first day. With the help of the Merlin App, I have identified boisterous Carolina Wrens calling back and forth. There are also the soothing coos of the Mourning Doves.

We had a severe storm last night and I was glad to be warm and dry while also very much experiencing the storm -- hearing and seeing the sheets of rain, gusts of wind and claps of thunder (no bright lightning).

My host and her children came by for a visit during the storm. They are fascinated with my adventure and were such flattering company -- asking questions about Bedichek and letterboxing, looking at pictures I had taken, expressing a genuine interest. I appreciated them enduring my excitement about my finds! I hope they will be the first ones to find the letterbox I planted at Barton Springs!
