News from Bartlett

Writer's picture: Karen Derrick-DavisKaren Derrick-Davis

The third and fourth (final) pages of Bedi's journal resurfaced in my documents from last year's trip. Here are his reflections from his first couple of days.

Things that stuck in my memory – Tender shoots of corn – a field of it – Pekin ducks waddling away frightened holding heads first on one side and then another – Green of trees – lights of town in distance --- odor from peach orchards – a lost bird-dog – [band?] practicing across the street from me now

Wednesday Mar 24

Caught in rain yesterday – walked wheel down the track for 3 miles – hard walking – wet. Gale blew up from south preventing progress further than Bartlett in afternoon. Wrist very sore from leading wheel against high wind.  Find it good plan to apologize for scaring teams – immediately people protest that their horses are to blame. On the other hand they pass you with glum faces and sour looks find boys of eighteen or thereabouts.

Below is a bicycle from the 1909 Sears Catalogue. Bedi sold his bike for $25 when he got to El Paso and noted that he sold it for about what he paid for it. If he bought it new, this might be something like what he rode.
